The Ouyen Public Hospital was built in 1928 to provide health services to the local community. Over time this expanded to include nursing home and hostel accommodation. In 1997, the hospital and aged care services were merged with three Bush Nursing Centres (Murrayville; Underbool and Patchewollock); two Neighbourhood Houses (Murrayville and Ouyen) and the Link Community Service (Transport and Social Support). The combined entity was named Mallee Track Health and Community Service and was classified as a Multi-Purpose Service.
The original hospitals in Sea Lake were privately owned and included one which opened in 1910 and another in 1930. The latter facility was expanded in 1941 to include an eight bed bush nursing hospital. In 1969, a new facility was opened on donated land and the Sea Lake and District Hospital was opened. In 1979, the facility was extended to include a six bed aged care service. The Carinya Hostel for the Aged was opened on 1983. In 1990, Carinya merged with the hospital to form the Sea Lake and District Health Service Inc. In 2000, Kaleesa Nursing Home was recognised as an accredited aged care facility. Despite strong community support, the health service was unable to maintain financial viability and in 2011, the Sea Lake and District Health Service joined the Mallee Track Health and Community Service.
The current MTHCS provides services to the communities of Murrayville, Cowangie, Underbool, Walpeup, Patchewollock, Manangatang, Ouyen, Speed, Tempy, Nandaly, Mittyack, Sea Lake, Berriwillock, Woomelang and Culgoa covering over 18,000 square kilometres with a total population of 5041.
